MOSUL film premiere at Cleveland Film Festival

MOSUL Film premieres on April 5th, 2019 at Cleveland Film Festival.

How do you tell the story of Mosul, the Iraqi city where an estimated 10,000 people, including 3,000 civilians, were killed in 2016 to 17 as a joint force of Iraqi, Kurdish, American and French troops led a bloody battle to retake control from ISIS?

How do you convey the horror on the ground faced by troops, and civilians, of life under ISIS during the nearly two-year battle?

First time director Daniel Gabriel has chosen to tell this story through the eyes of those who were on the ground, in real time. The powerful documentary is comprised of combat footage and raw interviews taken by Iraqi journalist, Ali Maula from October 2016 to August 2017. Maula got extraordinary access to refugee camps, ISIS detainees and combat zones – often at great danger to his and his crew’s life. American filmmaker Daniel Gabriel has edited it into a gripping narrative of life during “total warfare.” Politics are not discussed much, instead, Gabriel chooses to focus on the human toll in the moment. A former CIA officer who did six tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, his personal experience adds to the movie’s verite approach. Gabriel will be in attendance at the screenings this weekend. Friday is the film’s world premiere.
